We help you choose

Spring piston air rifles are quite straightforward. All you need to do is to cock the mainspring, insert a pellet, disengage the safety and pull the trigger. Even a child can do it. Their biggest selling point is their affordable price. You don’t need much to get you started. Just buy some pellets, a cleaning kit and maybe a scope and you are good to go.

Spring Piston Air Rifles and Their Variants

Spring piston air rifles are quite straightforward. All you need to do is to cock the mainspring, disengage the safety and pull the trigger. Even a child can do it. You can cock them by either breaking the barrel – break barrel air rifles or with the cocking lever – underlever air rifles. The underlevers have one significant advantage and that is their fixed barrel which positively affects their accuracy. The cocking lever and the sturdy construction make them heavier so they might not be the best choice for younger shooters. The sidelever air rifles are the least common variant.

Calibers and Ammunition

Air rifles are silent and safe. You can even shoot with them in your backyard. There are two main available calibers – .177 (4,5 mm) and .22 (5,5 mm). We would recommend choosing the .177 if you want to focus on target shooting. The .22 is suited for more destructive tasks. The BB guns, like the models from US manufacturers Crosman and Daisy are a perfect choice for plinking.

Affordable Air Rifles for Beginners

Airguns will help you hone your skills and improve your reflexes and you can start with them at a relatively young age, under the supervision of adults of course. Many of us had started shooting with an old break barrel from our grandad. The biggest selling point of spring piston air rifles is their affordable price. You don’t need much to get you started. Just buy some pellets, a cleaning kit and maybe a scope or a set containing an air rifle with a scope and you are good to go. Don’t forget to purchase some targets as well.

Sporting Spring Piston Air Rifles

You are going to have to pay more if you want to win competitions with a spring piston air rifle. Some .177 caliber (4,5 mm) models are especially designed for target shooting. Check out the German manufacturer Weihrauch or the British Air Arms. Their price is similar to the cheapest PCP air rifle but they will outperform them without any problems.
