The Walter PL71r is a solid flashlight with a convincing 1800 lumens output. The light output can be concentrated to a smaller spot or spread over a larger area thanks to the adjustable focus. This mechanism is provided through a sliding head - pulling it away from the body focuses the light cone to a smaller area, otherwise you expand the cone. The maximum range is 230 m.
There are several intensity levels and they change in descending steps (RAMP DOWN). You switch the light on with one press and gradually reduce the intensity from 1800 lm to 10 lm with the next (moon mode, which is great for reading in a tent, for example). If you need a quick return to high intensity, a quick double press of the switch is all you need.
Long press the ON/OFF button to switch the light to strobe. Similarly, you can then jump to beacon and a quick double-press will return the flashlight to a stable maximum intensity.
The individual modes are also variably programmable. The programming mode is entered when the flashlight is switched on. Four seconds after starting, press the button 4 times, if the flashlight flashes 4 times, it is ready for programming.
The flashlight includes a proprietary charging system for the 18650 battery. The battery is included and is charged directly in the flashlight via a micro USB cablel - this is also included. The back cover with button is also equipped with a LED battery charge indicator. If the voltage drops below 2.9 V, the flashlight will turn off and on by itself every minute - in this state it needs to be charged immediately. The battery life depends on the light mode. At maximum intensity, you do not have to worry about the dark for approximately two hours and fifteen minutes. However, if you just want to read under the covers and in your tent, the battery will last over three days (80 hours).
The
PL71r has a durable case made of anodized aircraft aluminum and features IPX4 protection. That means you'll get some light in the rain, but it's not for diving. This protection also includes resistance to minor impacts.
