Spring piston air rifles are pretty straightforward. All you need to do is to cock the mainspring, disengage the safety and pull the trigger. Their biggest selling point is their affordable cost and reliability. They are a weapon of choice for people who want something for recreational target shooting. The Slavia series from CZ is the quintessential break barrel air rifle which was the first gun for most of us. They are sadly discontinued now and other brands like the Spanish Cometa or Gamo have taken its place.
The models from German manufacturer Weihrauch and its UK counterpart Air Arms are one of the most sought-after and precise models with good track records. Both brands are competing amongst themselves for the title of the best break barrel air rifle.
They might look like ordinary break barrels at a first glance but their insides tell a different story. The mainspring was replaced by the gas piston filled with inert gas (nitrogen for example) or compressed air. Gas piston air rifles offer a lower recoil and reduced vibrations which has a positive effect on your scope. They also ensure better shot-to-shot consistency, increased service life and reduced noise.
One of the most prominent figures on today’s market is the Spanish manufacturer Gamo with its Gamo IGT series (Inert Gas Technology) which have been recently joined by airguns with magazines. Turkish manufacturer Hatsan tries to keep up with its affordable Vortex series of guns.
PCP stands for Pre-charged Pneumatic and that makes sense because these rifles are powered by compressed air. Some models even have a maximum working pressure of 300 bar. This means you can forget about filling it with a common compressor. You are going to need special pumps or scuba tanks. The large pressure packs a serious punch and that is why the PCP air rifles are considered to be the most powerful airguns.
You will never want anything else once you try the accuracy of the PCP. Some experts even claim that PCPs are the most accurate guns in the world. They usually come without iron sights and that is why you are going to need to buy a scope. We also have to mention that a large portion of the high-end PCPs are manufactured right here in the Czech Republic. These brands include Taipan, Kalibrgun, Airgun Royal and Altaros. We have intentionally left out the CZ because their CZ 200 is no longer in production.
Just like their PCP counterparts, the CO2 air rifles are silent and without any recoil. They are powered by carbon dioxide (CO2) instead of compressed air. The CO2 usually comes in a form of 12g or 88g single-use cartridges. You can simply discard them after emptying them. Their disadvantage lies in their dependency on the surrounding temperature. You won’t be able to shoot in temperatures below +10 °C. Some CO2 airguns are even capable of shooting in a fully automatic mode.
