Which airgun caliber should I get?

Mirka Němcová

Picking the right caliber for your airgun is a key step to getting the most out of it. Whether you're into target shooting, pest control, or just want something for recreational shooting, each caliber comes with its own pros and cons. Here's a quick guide to help you decide based on your shooting style and expectations.

CALIBER 4.5 MM / .177 – CHAMPION OF PRECISION

The 4.5 mm / .177 caliber is super common in low-powered airguns, especially those designed for precision target shooting at shorter distance. Pellets with a smaller diameter leave more distinct holes in the target—as larger calibers can overlap, making it harder to see the individual results. Furthermore, with PCP airguns, you benefit from lower air consumption.

Pros:

  • Excellent accuracy – ideal for target shooting
  • Low ammunition cost – ideal for training and beginners
  • Low air consumption (with PCP airguns)

Cons:

  • Lower muzzle energy and stopping power
  • More affected by wind especially at longer distances

👉 For better stability and energy, we recommend using heavier pellets – they increase efficiency without losing accuracy.

Caliber 5.5 MM / .22 – Jack of all trades

The 5.5 mm caliber is generally considered the most universal, as it incorporates some of the qualities of both the 4.5 mm and 6.35 mm calibers. Although it does not excel in any particular area, it is favored for its all-around versatility. Compared to the 4.5 mm caliber, it provides higher impact energy and, thanks to its higher weight, better flight stability. However, the higer diameter holes can overlap in a small target.

Pros:

  • Higher impact energy
  • Versatile use – recreational shooting, pest control, hobby
  • Better flight stability than 4.5 mm

Cons:

  • Lower stopping power compared to 6.35 mm
  • Less accurate evaluation of hits on the target

👉 The ideal choice if you are looking for a multi-purpose airgun for various applications without any trade-offs.

Caliber 6.35 MM / .25 – POWER YOU CAN FEEL

EPIC ONE, Valiant EPIC scope

Nowadays, you will more and more often come across 6.35 mm / .25 caliber airguns. Why? Because almost every single airgun manufacturer competes to achieve the highest muzzle energy possible. And this caliber is exactly about that. Thanks to the higherpellet weight, you get a massive stopping power and perfect trajectory stability even at long distances, at the expense of higher sound level, higher cost of ammunition, and, in the case of PCP airguns, higher air consumption.

Pros:

  • Maximum destructive power – ideal for pest control and tough targets
  • Excellent ballistic stability – less affected by wind
  • Strong acoustic and visual effect – exciting shooting experience

Cons:

  • Louder shots
  • More difficult to evaluate hits on the target
  • Higher air consumption (with PCP air rifles)

👉 If you are looking for a powerful airgun for pest control or destructive shooting, the 6.35 mm caliber is perfect for you.
