The German company Umarex, more specifically their division T4E (Training for Engagement), presents the second generation of the best‑selling revolver for rubber and pepper projectiles called HDR50 Gen2. It is clear that the manufacturer listened to customer feedback and introduced welcome changes, while not unnecessarily modifying anything that works flawlessly.
The most important difference compared to the original version (11J) is the increase in power up to 13J, which ranks it among the most powerful short RAM guns in .50 calibre.
The second major change is the new valve for activating the 12g CO2 cartridge. It has been modified so that it can be easily loosened by hand without the need for an Allen key. It still performs its function perfectly – in a threat situation you just need to lightly strike it with the palm of your hand, which pierces the neck of the cartridge and the gun is ready to fire. A revolver prepared in this way can be carried indefinitely without the risk of degrading the sealing O‑rings. After activation, a so‑called pressure indicator pops up above the grip, indicating that the revolver is pressurised.
Other minor changes include a non‑slip grip texture, sights with fiber‑optic rods to make aiming easier even in low‑light conditions, a top Picatinny rail extended by 1 slot for easier mounting of a larger red dot sight, and a deepened area around the magazine release.
The bottom Picatinny rail for mounting a laser or flashlight and the convenient trigger‑integrated safety remain unchanged.
As ammunition you can use all types of RAM balls, such as rubber, pepper or marking projectiles. Thanks to the rotary magazine the revolver is also compatible with non‑spherical projectiles.
Since the gun is powered by CO2 cartridges, the rubber seals can become brittle and crack over time due to the freezing carbon dioxide. You can prevent this by occasionally applying silicone oil 1) in a spray, simply spraying the internal mechanism, 2) applying a few drops of silicone oil to the neck of the inserted cartridge, 3) using an oil cartridge (the easiest option). At the same time, we do not recommend leaving an activated cartridge in the gun longer than necessary. If you know you will not be shooting for some time, release the pressure by loosening the valve.
