PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Decorative replica of a matchlock pistol based on a Japanese short firearm from around 1800. It is intended as a collector’s and decorative item inspired by an exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Replica construction
The grip and front part of the body are wooden, while the barrel and lock assembly are metal. The replica features a moving mechanism simulating the operation of the weapon.
Historical original
Matchlock firearms reached Japan through the Portuguese in 1543, and Japanese craftsmen subsequently began producing them according to the imported examples. Pistols of this type, known as bajó-zucu, were primarily associated with mounted samurai during the Edo period; in addition to their practical use, they also represented a symbol of status and wealth.
